Burney's first tour was translated into German by Ebeling, and printed at Hamburg in 1772; and his second tour, translated into German by Bode, was published at Hamburg in 1773.
Dr Burney's eldest son, James, was a distinguished officer in the royal navy, who died a rear-admiral in 1821; his second son was the Rev. Charles Burney, D.D. (1757-1817), a well-known classical scholar, whose splendid collection of rare books and MSS.

Charles Burney was born at Shrewsbury, and educated at the free school of that city.
Returning to Shrewsbury at the age of fifteen, Burney continued his musical studies for three years under his half-brother, James Burney, organist of St Mary's church, and was then sent to London as a pupil of the celebrated Dr Thomas Arne for three years.

At the age of 25 Burney already had a good reputation in London as a teacher and composer, and was well received in both artistic and social circles.
Burney was to be organist until 1760, when he moved back to London and pursued his life of travel and music commentary which was to make him the foremost music historian of his time.

Amidst his various professional avocations, Burney never lost sight of his favorite object -- his History of Music -- and therefore resolved to travel abroad for the purpose of collecting materials that could not be found in Great Britain.

Charles BURNEY was a farmer, and during the late war, owing to the persecution he was obliged to undergo at the hands of the Southern sympathizers, was compelled to leave Alabama.
BURNEY'S parents were born in Sheffield, England, and after coming to the United States located first in South Carolina, then in Alabama, and lastly in Misssouri.
BURNEY followed the occupation of farming, and the following nineteen years were spent at marble cutting and engraving, which he had learned at Fayetteville, Ark. He served in Company D., First Arkansas Infantry, United Sates Army, and was honorably discharged August 10, 1865.

In 1818, the British Museum purchased for £13,500 the remarkable library of the Revd Dr Charles Burney (1757-1817), the son of the music historian - also Dr Charles Burney (1726-1814) - and the brother of the novelist and diarist, Fanny Burney (1752-1840).
Since the Burney Collection of Newspapers is one of the British Library's most important and heavily-used microfilm collections, it has been chosen to provide materials for the Library's experimental microfilm digitisation project, which has concentrated upon the parts of the collection which relate to the French Revolution.
A reference Photostat copy of the Burney Collection Catalogue of Newspapers is also held, in four volumes, on the open shelves of the New Reading Room (1996) of the Newspaper Library.
