MERRITT - Charles Cecil Ingersoll awarded the Victoria Cross in World War II, passed away 12 July, 2000 in Vancouver, B.C., his city of birth, at the age of 91.
Merritt is survived by his sister, Beatrice MacMillan, daughter Elizabeth Systad and husband Roger, sons Peter and Cecil Merritt and wife Lily.
Cecil Merritt enjoyed an extremely active life having been a Conservative Member of Parliment and serving as Commanding Officer of the 72nd Seaforth Highlanders for a term after the War.

During the ill-fated Canadian raid on Dieppe, France on Aug. 19, 1942, Merritt first overcame German resistance holding a bridge, personally leading his men forward.
He refused evacuation and was last seen taking up a defensive position covering his comrades' escape.
Along with about 2,000 other Canadian soldiers that day, Merritt was taken prisoner.
