Charles Edward - LoveToKnow 1911   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Charles, upon whose head a reward of £30,000 had a year before been set, was thus for over five months relentlessly pursued by the troops and spies of the government.
Charles had forestalled the proclamation of the treaty by an indignant protest against its injustice, and a declaration that he would not be bound by its provisions.
Charles, lonely, ill, and evidently near death, now summoned to Florence his natural daughter, Charlotte Stuart, the child of Clementina Walkinshaw, born at Liege in October 1753 and hitherto neglected by the prince.

Charles City Shire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Charles City Shire was formed in 1634 in the Virginia colony.
Charles City Shire originally extended to both sides of the James River, and Charles City Point on the south side later became known simply as City Point, in an area subdivided to form Prince George County.
In 2005, Charles City County is considered one of only five shires in Virginia still extant, having remained essentially the same political entity as it was when originally formed.

Shown is an artist rendering of The Shire, an upscale mixed-use retail/office/dining complex to be located near the southwest corner of the Bush Turnpike and Jupiter Road.
Design plans for The Shire call for a pedestrian-friendly style of architecture reminiscent of the early 20th century, resembling a village center of that era, with restaurants and retail stores on the first floor and office condos on the second floor.
Charles Eisemann, chairman of the Richardson Chamber of Commerce, commented: “Dale Wamstad has chosen Richardson as the place where he and his family will invest their time and financial resources to bring unique dining experiences, as well as other retail boutiques and businesses providing quality products and services, to this neighborhood.

The first eight counties were the four existing Incorporations (Charles City, Elizabeth City - which replaced the "heathen" name of Kecoughtan, Henrico, and James City) plus four new areas: Accomack, Charles River, Warrosquyoake, and Warwick River.
The boundaries of the eight counties were drawn so most colonists could reach their county court sessions, where justices dealt with property issues and criminal accusations, in one day.
The decision reflected the population growth of the colony, which created a need for official decisions that were local and not of concern to the entire House (or appropriate to delay until the next session of the House of Burgesses).

As the early colonists continued to spread out their settlements and their numbers grew, the General Assembly soon found it necessary to create eight shires in which to govern the colony and hold court.

The creation of the shires, which later became known as counties, was to make the administration of justice more accessible to the colonists.
