In the News (Fri 25 Dec 09)

  Charles Collett
harles Benjamin Collett, the son of a journalist, was born on the 10th of September 1871.
Collett's memory did not allow him to forget his early treatment and when the second conflict broke out, he was very reluctant to allow the GWR workshops to undertake any munitions work.
Collett decided that these 'new' engines should be given the names of those directors who were keen on the idea.

Collett's early background was in marine engineering, but a post in the drawing office at Swindon, which he took up in 1893, set him on course for an acclaimed career in railway engineering.
Like Churchward, Collett was a firm believer in standardisation wherever possible, but this proved a disadvantage when a large number of small railway companies - most of them Welsh - were absorbed into the GWR in 1922/23.
This was in marked contrast to his predecessors, particularly Joseph Armstrong, who saw their duties towards the welfare of both the Swindon workforce and the population of the town at large as an integral part of the job.

Charles Benjamin Collett & F.W. Hawksworth
Collett is a difficult subject: there is a vast amount of material on "his" two major new locomotive classes: the Castles (Caerphilly Castle above) and the Kings, and even on such minor developments as the Hall, Grange and 61XX classes.
As engineers are mainly assessed by what remains of their work Collett may be assessed to be of far greater significance than Gresley, as far more Collett locomotives remain than those of Gresley, but this would be an absurdity as Collett's designs are little more than minor advances upon those of Churchward.
An overall assessment of Collett's contribution which notes the contribution made to manufacturing methods at Swindon, the significance of the AEC railcars introduced during the 1930s and the possible use of Beardsmore electro-diesel power units for suburban trains in London.

Charles Collett - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Charles Benjamin Collett (September 10, 1871 - April 5, 1952) was chief mechanical engineer of the Great Western Railway from 1922 to 1941.
Combining high boiler pressures with superheat made efficient use of the high calorific-value steam coal from the mines in South Wales, and reduced mechanical and boiler wear.
Collett was not the brilliant engineer that Churchward was, but he was a practical development engineer, and so he took Churchward's designs and simply developed them - the Hall from the Saint class, and the Castle from the Stars.

Today, Sir Daniel Gooch, Joseph Armstrong, William Dean, George Jackson Churchward, Charles Collett and Frederick Hawksworth may not be remembered as fervently as figures like Brunel - even in Swindon - but they were arguably the six most important men in the town's history.
Churchward retired in 1921 and the baton was passed to Collett, during whose tenure the Great Western arguably enjoyed its golden era thanks to the Castle and King class locomotives.
Collett was chief mechanical engineer for 20 years, finally succeeded by Frederick Hawksworth, the last King of Steam, in 1941.
