C.A. Coulson - Component of : Early Ideas in the History of Quantum Chemistry.
Coulson was born in Dudley, Yorkshire, and studied at Cambridge.
Charles Coulson was born at Dudley in Worcestershire in 1910.
Charles Coulson gave a few important review lectures, in addition to his Inaugural, during the last years of his life; and I think these, along with other things he wrote, help to give a fairly clear picture of what might be called his "scientific philosophy".

 Coulson, Castles in Medieval Society
Charles Coulson has been writing about castles for the last thirty years (as the twenty-seven entries under his own name in the wide-ranging bibliography testify), and this book is a summation of this three decades of work.
Instead, Coulson sees castles primarily as an expression and embodiement of lordship, serving a practical purpose as the administrative centres of the estates, or castellaries, of which they were an integral part.
Coulson’s writing style is idiosyncratic; in particular, the many discursive footnotes are written in a curiously clipped style, somewhat akin to a reader’s scribbled marginal annotations.

In the spring of 1952, Charles returned to Oxford as Rouse Ball Professor of Mathematics, and established a large and active group which drew visitors from all over the world, and he set up a Summer School in 1955 which he led until 1973 and which, now in the Department of Theoretical Chemistry, runs still.

One of his books, Valence (1952), was ground-breaking, not only in terms of its lucid exposition of quantum ideas, but also for its support of the molecular orbital theory of chemical bonding, which at the time was overshadowed by the valence bond theory advanced by Linus Pauling and others.
Many examples from Coulson’s life highlight his unity of belief and action: His belief in a personal religious experience, the role of a group’s fellowship in confirming that experience and a call to holiness affected Coulson’s approach to his scientific co-workers, his research group and his general promotion of science to a wider public.
Coulson’s religion was with him every day and every hour, influencing his personal relationships, affecting his career path, shaping his view of history, informing his idea of “natural philosophy” and guiding the even-handed manner in which theories of chemical bonding were presented and defended.

Now Coulson was a scion of Cambridge mathematics, confident of the central role of advanced mathematical tools in solving chemical problems, and many of his efforts certainly were directed towards developing mathematical methods for quantum chemistry (Altmann and Bowen 1974, 107-10).
The Pragmatics of Explanation Slater and Coulson both appeal to the notion of explanation to make normative claims about the application of quantum mechanics to chemistry, but the points they make are opposed, suggesting that their views of explanation are opposed too.
In his 1960 critique of the ‘ab initio’ methods, Coulson noted that the numerical methods that were developed to address the tractability issue, and which became so powerful with the advent of digital computing, have their own drawbacks.

In a 1959 after-dinner speech at a conference on molecular quantum mechanics held at the University of Colorado, the late Charles Coulson reviewed the state of molecular-structure calculations.
John Coleman was stimulated to take up the challenge set by Coulson, that is, to make the RDM the basic starting point for all molecular calculations.
One wonders how Coulson, whose writing was a model of transparency, would have reacted to it.
