Charles Crichton, who has died aged 89, directed some of the most important British film comedies of the post-war years.
Crichton, who died at home in South Kensington, west London, on Tuesday after a short illness, made the very first of what were to become known as the "Ealing comedies".
Crichton become an full-time editor, working on such distinguished movies as Things to Come, with a script by HG Wells, and The Thief of Baghdad, which was completed in Hollywood due to the Blitz.

Crichton reached his height in comedy, most notably with the East End kids comedy Hue and Cry (1947), the Oscar-winning The Lavender Hill Mob (1951) and the eccentric railway comedy The Titfield Thunderbolt (1953).
Crichton returned to the big screen as the request of John Cleese, to direct A Fish Called Wanda (1988), a fl comedy in the Ealing style of Crichton’s earlier work.

Like several of his Ealing colleagues, Crichton started out in the cutting room, working for Korda on Things to Come and The Thief of Bagdad, and was said to be one of the finest editors in the British film industry.
Though the serious side of Crichton's output, the dramas and thrillers, has attracted little attention, he often seems here less at the mercy of his script, able to make something personal even of flawed material.
Crichton's cool, unemphatic handling of the central conflict in The Divided Heart deftly avoids emotional overkill—though nothing, perhaps, could have prevented the film's final slide into sententiousness.

But I do note with some surprise that Charles Crichton, who directed The Lavender Hill Mob in 1951 also directed, with John Cleese, A Fish Called Wanda in 1988.
Inexplicably, he also directed several episodes of Space: 1999, arguably the worst science fiction television series ever produced.
