The Case of Charles Dexter Ward - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Case of Charles Dexter Ward is a novella by H.
The titular character, Charles Dexter Ward, is a young man from a prominent family who (in the story's introduction) is said to have disappeared after a prolonged period of insanity accompanied by minor but unheard-of physiological changes.
Ward is born in 1902; he is 26 in 1928, at the time the story takes place.

He bore the name of Charles Dexter Ward, and was placed under restraint most reluctantly by the grieving father who had watched his aberration grow from a mere eccentricity to a dark mania involving both a possibility of murderous tendencies and a profound and peculiar change in the apparent contents of his mind.
Charles Ward was an antiquarian from infancy, no doubt gaining his taste from the venerable town around him, and from the relics of the past which filled every corner of his parents' old mansion in Prospect Street on the crest of the hill.
Ward's resemblance to her ancestor was not at all marked, though she could recall relatives who had some of the facial characteristics shared by her son and by the bygone Curwen.

Charles Ward is an intellectual young recluse steeped in antiquarianism (much as Lovecraft himself was) who discovers horrible secrets about a distant ancestor, one consciously expunged from public records and histories at the end of his ill-begotten life.
Ward engulfs himself in a genealogical and historical pursuit of knowledge of this man, a passion all the more emblazoned by each mysterious discovery he makes.
Ward's knowledge of Curwen is greatly advanced when he discovers an old painting of him (revealing a face virtually identical to his own) and a set of personal papers hidden behind that painting.

The Case of Charles Dexter Ward is chock full of fear and little else as it takes you through the paranoia of the American colonial days, through the degeneration of a young man's sanity, and through the ancient catacombs of an old house where something inhuman screams from the bottom of a pit.
Charles Dexter Ward is one of Lovecraft's best, wherein he triumphantly achieves what he sets out to do - create an effective atmosphere of terror and dread, where ancient and unspoken beings and forces dwell behind the scenes of everyday life.

Ward found a single intact copy after much search in the archives of a private collector of note, observing with amusement the meaningless urbanity of the language:
The collection of Durfee-Arnold letters, discovered by Charles Ward shortly before his first reputed madness in the private collection of Melville F. Peters, Esq., of George St., and covering this and a somewhat antecedent period, throws vivid light on the outrage done to public sentiment by this ill-assorted match.
Charles Ward, as we have seen, first learned in 1918 of his descent from Joseph Curwen.

Necromancy in Charles Dexter Ward   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The ritual that Charles Dexter Ward performed to revive the long-dead Joseph Curwen seems to have had at least four major parts or elements.
Ward performed the ritual in the attic of his parent's home while his own mother listened on in horror.
This conclusion is born out in the narrative of Charles Dexter Ward, for Ward recites the first of the spells when reanimating Curwen, whereas Willett uses the second spell to return Curwen to dust.

It sounds very much like a story from one of his more Poe-influenced moments, so if you liked that I recommend "The Rats in the Walls," "The Outsider," "and "The Shadow over Innsmouth." Each of these is very much in the Gothic horror tradition, filled with old crumbling buildings, degenerate families and hereditary madness.
The number 118 came from the 8th to 9th century and wrote in a dialect of Latin, though with Britannian root.
