Charles Doolittle Walcott, a paleontologist and Secretary (1907-1927) of the Smithsonian, began research in the fossil-bearing Burgess Shale region in the Rocky Mountains, Canada.
Walcott collected these fossils, and when looked at the phyla to which they belonged, he was amazed, because the fossil stratum he had found was so very ancient.
As the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, Walcott was a dyed-in-the-wool Darwinist.

Charles Doolittle Walcott, Paleontologist : Ellis L. Yochelson
Charles Doolittle Walcott (1850–1927) is one of the most important and highly respected figures in the history of geology.
With very little formal education (he did not complete high school), Walcott became special assistant to James Hall, State Paleontologist of New York, and made a fundamental contribution to the study of trilobites by describing their limbs.
Walcott is known best for having documented in detail the “Cambrian,”; the oldest richly fossiliferous rocks in the world.

 Charles Doolittle Walcott,
Readers of the new biography of Charles Doolittle Walcott may be disappointed that it essentially reverses the bias inherent in most representations of geologic time.
Although many of Walcott’s predecessors and contemporaries also pulled themselves up by their bootstraps (Schuchert being another prime example), there are few comparable rags-to-riches stories of such scope.
Again, as the Precambrian sets the stage for the Phanerozoic, Walcott’s early life is an important preamble to his directorship of the Smithsonian and discovery of the Burgess shale.

Walcott may not have finsihed high-school, but eventually became the Director of the U.S. Gerological Survey and Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution.
Unfortunately, in Yochelson's overblown biography we are subjected to detailed descriptions of every ailment suffered by Walcott and his immediate family and after 468 pages are abruptly told that the final 20 years of his life constitutes another story.
The two decades that include Walcott's tenure as Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution represents a period that would certainly be of greater interest to most readers than the day-planner chronology that occurs here.

Smithsonian Institution Secretary, Charles Doolittle Walcott : Ellis L. Yochelson
Charles Doolittle Walcott (1850-1927) is a highly respected figure in the history of geology and paleontology.

Using Walcott’s letters and journals and the recollections of friends and colleagues, Yochelson discusses Walcott’s life and career as secretary of the Smithsonian Institution.
