William Douglas (1634-1694), younger son of the 1st Marquess of Douglas was created Earl of Selkirk and Lord Daer and Shortcleuch in the peerage of Scotland on 4 August 1646.

William Douglas (1634-1694), younger son of the 1st Marquess of Douglas was created Earl of Selkirk and Lord Daer and Shortcleuch in the peerage of Scotland on 4 August 1646.
He outlived his son and heir and the titles created with the Earl of Ruglen was passed onto his daughter Anne Hamilton, 2nd Countess of Ruglen and through her marriage to the families of the Earl of March and the Duke of Queensberry.
His son Thomas Douglas (1771-1820) and grandson Dunbar James Douglas (1809-1885) succeeded him but upon the 6th Earl's death the title Earl of Selkirk devolved upon the 12th Duke of Hamilton, given special remainder this meant that the title was inherited by the 12th Duke's younger brother, Charles George Douglas-Hamilton (1847-1886).

James, 2nd Lord Hamilton, son of the 1st lord and Princess Mary, was created earl of Arran in 1503; and his son James, who was regent of Scotland from 1542 to 1554, received in February 1549 a grant of the duchy of Chfltellerault in Poitou.
At the pacification of Perth in 1573 the Hamiltons abandoned Marys cause, and a reconciliation with the Douglases was sealed by Lord Johns marriage with Margaret, daughter of the 7th Lord Glamis, a cousin of the regent Morton.
JAMES DOUGLAS, 4th duke of Hamilton (1658-1712), eldest son of the preceding and of Duchess Anne, succeeded his mother, who resigned the dukedom to him in 1698, and at the accession of Queen Anne he was regarded as leader of the Scottish national party.

Earl of Ruglen was a title in the Peerage of Scotland.
The 1st Earl of Ruglen succeeded as 3rd Earl of Selkirk on the death of his elder brother in 1739.
The Earl's only son William, Lord Daer, died in 1742, so on the death of the Earl of Selkirk and Ruglen in 1744, the Earldom of Selkirk passed to his great-nephew, while the Earldom of Ruglen passed to his daughter, Anne, who had married William Douglas, 2nd Earl of March.

The novodamus dicatated that should the earldom ever devolve to the holder the title of Duke of Hamilton, his younger brother and his heirs should succeed to the title before him.
When he died without a male issue his distant cousin Alfred Douglas Douglas-Hamilton (1862-1940) inherited the earldom of Selkrik along with the dukedom.

Earl of Selkirk, was born 20 June 1771 at their Kirkcudbright estate in southwest Scotland.
Earl of Selkirk died on 8 April 1820, 48 years-old, in Pau, France, where he is buried.
Selkirk also wrote that Hamilton "admits that as Territory Louisiana is of no value to the U.S. and thinks they ought to exchange the Western bank of Mississippi for the Floridas" and "has serious apprehensions of the present ascendancy of Democratic principles ending in Anarchy" (pp 128 and 129).
