The Corporation was constituted by a Charter from King Edward VI in 1549, confirmed by Queen Elizabeth ; this Charter was revoked by King James II under a writ of "Quo Warranto" and a fresh one granted, which gave the Crown the power to appoint the Mayor and Aldermen.
It is recorded that the Queen with some of the Court ladies and gentlemen went disguised to one of the neighbouring fairs, and there they were detected owing to their strange affected speech, and stranger apparel, and were escorted back to the palace by a body-guard of gaping rustics.
The Temple of Concord to the east of the Mansion, erected in honour of the recovery of George III in 1789, and the monument in the Deer Park, to the memory of the Countess of Portsmouth, were built by Lord Howard de Walden.
