Edward Smith-Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby (whose horse Bridget had been victorious in the race) and Sir Charles Bunbury flipped a coin and whoever won the toss was to have the race named after him.
The Earl achieved his first success in the race in 1787 with Sir Peter Teazle.
The first four runnings of the race were over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres) but this was amended in 1784 to the current distance of 1 mile 4 furlongs (2,414 metres).

 The New Brunswick Military Heritage Project
In 1794 Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, the fourth son of King George III, was the Commander of Halifax.
Constructed mainly of wood, most of the original buildings were lost through deterioration or fire; however, a number of the key buildings were replaced by stone ones.
Designed by Saint John architect F. Neil Brodie, and built by B. Mooney and Sons of Saint John, the cornerstone was laid on 23 July 1923 by Lord Byng, the Governor General and the Commander of the Canadian Corps at the Battle of Vimy Ridge.
