 Charles N. Elliot Papers (Library of Congress)
The collection of Charles N. Elliot, collector and researcher of Walt Whitman, was given to the Library of Congress by Elliot in 1943 and 1946 and by Charles E. Feinberg in 1956.
Elliot was one of a group of Whitman admirers whose efforts to promote the poet's work were directed toward collecting Whitman-related manuscripts and promoting the publication of scholarly articles and books about Whitman.
Elliot's correspondence with Alfred Bishop Beers, Richard Maurice Bucke, Margaret Wade Campbell Deland, Ward Hampton Edwards, John Erskine, Henry Scholey Saunders, Edwin Seaborn, Daniel Edward Sickles, Harriet Appleton Sprague, and Anne Montgomerie Traubel commented on personal and family affairs, the state of Whitman research, and the collection and preservation of Whitman artifacts and manuscripts.

Charles Elliot, British knight, admiral, and chargé d'affaires in Texas, the son of Hugh and Margaret Elliot, was born in 1801, probably in Dresden, Saxony, where his father was serving as British minister.
Elliot was reassigned and, on August 6, 1842, arrived at Galveston, Texas, as British chargé d'affaires of the Republic of Texas.
Elliot, called "the man in the white hat" in the press, was the subject of much newspaper comment during the annexation controversy.

In anticipation, Elliot seized the initiative by ordering a British expeditionary force under the command of General Sir Hugh Gough to break through the Bogue and move against Canton.
Elliot did not allow the occupation of Canton, fearing that if the troops were allowed to enter the city they would be swallowed up in its warren-like streets and alleys.

The two portraits were painted while Elliottwas in Albany during the winter of 1863-64 to paint a portrait of Erastus Corning I (1794-1872).
Elliot probably received the commission through the Corning family connections since Robert Banks was in business with Corning and Emma Banks was Corning's niece.
Elliot moved his residence to Albany but died in 1868 before he ever occupied his studio there.
