  Charles Fairburn - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Charles Edward Fairburn (5 September 1887 12 October 1945) was Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway.
Fairburn was made Acting CME when Stanier was called away on war work in 1942 and was officially made CME on Stanier's retirement in 1944.
Fairburn died of a heart attack aged 58 on 12 October 1945.

Charles was a successful Brewery owner who owned several homes and a fleet of chauffeur-driven cars.
One of the tales told is that in the middle of a dinner party, one of the young farm hands rushed to the Manor House in a panic to ask Mary’s advice on a cow who was experiencing a difficult delivery.
After Charles died, Mary carried on the farm with a succession of managers and farm hands until her death in 1948.

Fairburn was born in Bradford on 5 September 1887 and gained an Open Scholarship to Brasenose College, Oxford, in 1905.
Jarvis considered that Fairburn "had his own definite views and needed dipolmatic handling at times", moreover "he was not a fit man and could at times be quite irritable".
There is also a suggestion that whilst Fairburn was Acting CME he had not always been loyal to Stanier.

Fairburn Farm was homestead in the mid 1880s by John Jackson from Ireland and his wife, Mary Jackson, from Scotland.
Charles died in 1936 and after Mary passed away in the late 1940s son Edwin Jackson sold most of the acreage to MacMillan Bloedel, a major forest company.
Fairburn Farm became a summer camp during the 1960s and gave children the opportunity to learn crafts including pottery, art, horse riding, and farm chores under Mollie's organization.

On his retirement in 1944, Stanier was succeeded as CME by Charles Fairburn.
When Fairburn died suddenly in October 1945, a new shortlist was prepared and George Ivatt, the senior candidate, with significant LMS locomotive experience, was appointed CME on 1 February 1946.
Robert Riddles, the other notable candidate for the post, was promoted to the board as Vice-President of the LMS.
