Charles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, on February 12, 1809.He was the fifth of six children of Robert and Susannah Darwin (née Wedgwood), and the grandson of Erasmus Darwin, and of Josiah Wedgwood.
In 1874, the theologian Charles Hodge accused Darwin of denying the existence of God by defining humans to be a result of a natural process rather than a creation designed by God (an argument though that had been made by many almost immediately after Darwin's first publication).

Charles Harding Firth (March 16, 1857 - February 19, 1936) was a British historian.
He was Ford's lecturer in English history in 1900, and became regius professor of modern history at Oxford in succession to Frederick York Powell in 1904.
Firth's historical work was almost entirely confined to English history during the time of the English Civil War and the Commonwealth; and although he is somewhat overshadowed by SR Gardiner, who wrote about the same period, his books were highly regarded.

Cromwell entered Parliament in 1628, standing firmly with the opposition to Charles I, and was active in the Short and Long Parliaments (1640), although not a conspicuous leader.
In 1644 he pressed for a thorough reorganization of the parliamentary forces and was appointed (1645) second in command to Sir Thomas Fairfax (later Baron Fairfax of Cameron) in the resulting New Model Army, which defeated the king at Naseby in 1645.
However, he favored a moderate settlement with the king (as opposed to the radical proposals of the Levelers) until Charles’s flight to Carisbrooke (1647) and secret dealings with the Scots caused him to lose all hope of further negotiations with the king.

George Charles Moore Smith (1858-1940) was born at Whittlesea, Isle of Ely, the son of a solicitor, and the grandson of the Rev. James Clarke Franks, Vicar of Huddersfield, and of Elizabeth Firth of Thornton who was a friend of the Brontë family.
He was educated at Tonbridge School and, from 1877 to 1884 at St. John's College Cambridge, initially with an Entrance Exhibition in Classics which he exchanged in 1880 for a Foundation Scholarship.
Sir Charles Firth would eventually donate a substantial part of his extensive personal library to the University, much of which valuable material forms the basis of today's Rare Book Collection.
