1692), English soldier and politician, third son of Sir Miles Fleetwood of Aldwinkle, Northamptonshire, and of Anne, daughter of Nicholas Luke of Woodend, Bedfordshire, was admitted into Gray's Inn on the 30th of November 1638.
In the dispute between the army and parliament he played a chief part, and was said to have been the principal author of the plot to seize King Charles at Holmby, but he did not participate in the king's trial.
In 1649 he was appointed a governor of the Isle of Wight, and in 1650, as lieutenant-general of the horse, took part in Cromwell's campaign in Scotland and assisted in the victory of Dunbar.

Fleetwood was acquainted with most of the prominent Negroes of the period.

Fleetwood negotiated with the remaining guerrilla bands (known as "tories") to either surrender or to leave the country for service in the army of a country not at war with the Commonwealth of England.
While hesitating with which party to ally his forces, and while on the point of making terms with King Charles II, Monck's army restored the Rump Parliament on 24 December, whereupon Fleetwood was deprived of his command and ordered to appear before parliament to answer for his conduct.

When Monck decided to negotiate with Charles II for the restoration of the Stuart dynasty, the Long Parliament dissolved itself (16 March 1660)and called elections for a new Parliament to decide on what terms Charles should resume the throne.
The immediate aim of Charles II was to secure his position by unifying the country behind him and few of his father's opponents suffered.
Charles II himself was inclined to allow some degree of toleration, but Parliament continued to fear the Catholic threat.

I must assume he graduated from Fleetwood schools (the historical society has not been able to locate any records to confirm this) but he did graduate from Kutztown Normal School in 1900 at the age of 18.
In the late 1860s, John’s son Charles (George Messersmiths father), born in 1846, became a partner in a wadding mill.
The mill was built on the south side of the new railroad tracks and near the Fleetwood Dam.

Charles II from his vantage point on top of Worcester cathedral's tower realised that an opportunity to attack the now exposed eastern flank of the Parliamentary army.
Charles II escaped after many adventures, including one famous incident where he hid from a Parliamentarian patrol in an oak tree in the grounds of Boscobel House.
Charles was one of the few men in his army who regained a place of safety, about 3,000 were killed during the battle and a further 10,000 were taken prisoned at Worcester, most of the rest were captured shortly afterwards as they fled.

Charles Fleetwood was born in Northampton in about 1618.
In 1651 Fleetwood became a member of the Council of State and the following year married, Bridget Ireton, the daughter of Oliver Cromwell and the widow of Henry Ireton.
Fleetwood was unhappy with Cromwell's dictatorial methods and tried to persuade him not to dismiss Parliament in 1658.
