Charles Floyd (1782 - August 20, 1804) was a United States explorer, an officer and quartermaster in the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
A funeral was held and Floyd was buried on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River, which the expedition named Floyd's Bluff, in his honor.
However, after Floyd's journal was published in 1894, new interest was taken in him and his gravemarker was stolen by thieves.

Charles Rinaldo Floyd was born on October 14, 1797, at "The Thickets" in Darien to Isabella Maria Hazzard and John Floyd.
Floyd experienced another famous moment when, as commander of a marine honor guard, he was sent to meet the Marquis de Lafayette upon his arrival in New York City in 1824.
Floyd stayed at Fairfield most of the time, and it was there that he contracted a severe case of bilious fever in the spring of 1845; he died on March 22.

Charles Arthur Floyd, soon to be called " Chock" Floyd, was born on February 3, 1904 in Georgia, one of seven children, but moved to a small farming community in Oklahoma, which he was to call home. His parents had a small farm, they were dirt-poor.
In the mid 1920's Floyd lived and operated in the East Liverpool, Ohio area as a hired gun for the bootleggers and rum-runners along the Midland, PA and Steubenville, OH stretch of the Ohio River.
Floyd is reputed to have maintained relationships with both Ruby and Beulah throughout the rest of his life even posing as their husbands under assumed names.

On May 20, 1930, Floyd was arrested by the Toledo, Ohio, Police Department on a bank robbery charge and on November 24, 1930, was sentenced to 12 to 15 years in the Ohio State Penitentiary.
Floyd escaped enroute to the penitentiary and was a fugitive when he became involved in the Kansas City Massacre.
Floyd and Richetti removed their firearms from the vehicle and remained on the outskirts of the town, while Rose and Beulah Baird took the damaged car into a Wellsville garage for repairs.

The Sergeant Floyd Monument commemorates Sergeant Charles Floyd, Jr., the only member of the Corps of Discovery to die on the journey.
Writing in his diary on July 31st, Floyd noted, "I am verry sick and has ben for Sometime but have Recovered my helth again." However, this quick recovery was followed by a turn for the worse.
The night before his death, Clark remarked, "Serjeant Floyd is taken verry bad all at once with a Biliose Chorlick we attempt to relieve him without success as yet, hr gets worst and we are much allarmed at his Situation, all attention to him" (DeVoto 1997, 21).

Floyd died on August 20, 1804, and was buried on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi near the site of Sioux City; a prominent monument later erected in his memory is a National Historic Landmark.

After the announcement, the boys of St. Charles marched on Main Street to the public square and lit bonfires, made speeches, burned an effigy of the county court, and held a mock funeral oration.
Charles City once again weathered the storm and has remained the county seat to this day.
