SEARC'S WEB GUIDE - Charles Gavin Duffy (1816-1903)
Charles Gavin Duffy was born and educated in County Monaghan.
Duffy was imprisoned in 1846 for publishing articles in The Nation by Thomas D'Arcy McGee which advocated using the Irish railway system to aid a rising.
In August, 1848 Duffy was again tried for sedition and when a letter from Duffy to William Smith O'Brien was produced at the trial the charge was changed to one of High Treason.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Sir Charles Gavan Duffy
Duffy was editor, Dillon and Davis were among its contributors, and what with the ability of editor and contributors, the freshness and vigour of style, and the manly and militant tone adopted on public questions, the paper soon became a power.
Later, in the struggles between the Young and the Old Irelanders, Duffy took sides with the former against O'Connell, and was one of those who helped to found the Irish Confederation.
The failure of the Repeal movement, the horrors of the famine, and the death of O'Connell weakened his faith in constitutional action, and for a time, in 1848, he advocated revolutionary measures.

Both he and Duffy visited Ireland in 1866/7, although not together, but they did meet in London where Duffy arranged that he be invited to dinner by Lord O'Hagan; this does not seem to have resulted in any real reconciliation.
Duffy, in his memoirs, commented that the function was a failure and added that no priest would go to the banquet - not even the P.P. of Tipperary - and (who) commented that O'Shanassy had allowed himself to be taken up by the small Cromwellian gentry.
In view of their bitter estrangement it is probable that Duffy was a little biassed in this, but since O'Shanassy had by now become quite conservative in his opinions there is possibly some truth in his comments.
