Charles William Hayward was born in Wolverhampton on 3rd September 1892 and was educated at St. John's School.
Hayward also made sidecars for most of the leading motorcycle manufacturers, and Charles claimed to be the largest sidecar manufacturer in the world.
Charles was made a Freeman of the City of London in 1938, presented with a C.B.E. in 1970 and after retirement was Knighted in 1974.

Hayward retired in 1997 as a manager from the former American Hoist and Derrick Co. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and married the former Delores Anderson in Bay City.
He was predeceased by his parents, Raymond and Delia (nee Blackburn) Hayward; and daughter, Sheryl Kukla.

Around 1844, Joseph Hayward moved from Hathersage (Derbyshire) to Stocksbridge (South Yorkshire), to take up employment with his friend/acquaintance Samuel Fox who had moved from Derbyshire to start a factory at Stocksbridge in 1841.
Joseph Hayward (the younger) became well known in the community both as the inventor/designer of the steel umbrella frame (Fox "Paragon") on which Samuel Fox built his fortune, and as the founder of the local Co-operative Society.
One anecdote about Joseph, is that a workman at Fox's factory saw him with his head in his hands, apparently asleep, and reported this to Samuel Fox, who sent the person away with the remark: "He's worth more to me asleep than thou art wakken" (you have to imagine the Yorkshire/Derbyshire accent).
