JOHN F. HAYWARD: PHILOSOPHER OF RELIGION AND THE ARTS
Hayward likened Snow to Ralph Waldo Emerson—“with a perfect Harvard accent and a New Englander to the tips of his fingers.” Lyttle was a church historian and a humanist, with whom Hayward used to wrangle.
Hayward came to the Divinity School in 1951 as assistant professor of religion and art, and taught courses in the visual arts, myth theory, and theology.
Hayward explains, "By listening to each other they find new ways of interpreting pieces they've played for years." The result of this democratic endeavor is that no matter how many times you hear a piece of chamber music you hear it played differently by each ensemble of musicians.

This Heat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
They formed late 1975 in Brixton, London by multi-instrumentalists Charles Bullen (guitar, clarinet, viola, vocals, tapes), Charles Hayward (percussion, keyboards, vocals, tapes) and Gareth Williams (keyboard, guitar, bass, vocals, tapes).
Their first radio airplay came from, unsurprisingly, John Peel, whom they sent a demo tape (recorded in a disused meat factory) to in early 1977.
Hayward, at least, remains active musically to this day, with just as little commercial recognition as he had with This Heat.

This Heat: Deceit: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Hayward had worked with a fairly broad array of jazz and prog bands (and post-This Heat, would continue to do so), though Bullen and Williams were much less traveled, even as they were accomplished musicians.
Hayward's interest in all manner of world rhythms and percussion manifested itself in tracks like "Shrink Wrap" and "Independence" (words provided by one Thomas Jefferson), where kinetic drum orchestras and ancient rain forest flutes and strings lent the music an otherworldly quality which further removed it from recordings by This Heat's angry peers.
I don't know that Hayward, Bullen and Williams were trying to inspire (and that they debated over whether to release their music at all could be evidence to support that they weren't), but the overall feeling I take away from this album is that of revolution and a very creative form of protest.

 This Heat and Camberwell Now
Though the excellent essay on This Heat (which you hopefully just read) goes quite a ways to explain what an important musician Hayward has been and continues to be, let us set the scene for this conversation with the man himself.
Hayward was about fly back to his UK home to lead a tribute concert for his former band mate from This Heat, the late Gareth Williams.
Among the revelations below, you'll find that Charles is a rabid Abba fan as well as details of the local arts project in Southeast London where he's roping in many of his neighbors who are anything but 'artists' in the traditional sense of the word.

 Material Live 2004
The group was an integral part of what was then called the downtown "no-wave" scene, when avant-garde free jazz musicians would often share the same stage with punk rockers.
Over the years the Material name has gradually transcended the traditional concept of a "band" to embody something much larger; what was once a group has become a sprawling collective of like-minded artists and musicians that is constantly shifting in personnel and focus, all with Bill Laswell as the catalyst.
Known as some of the most prolific producer and musician ever, Bill Laswell still finds time to perform live all around the world namely with the Massacre trio (Fred Frith and Charles Hayward), or as initiator of the remarkable collective Tabla Beat Science (Zakir Hussain, Sultan Khan etc.).

Multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer, Roger Eno travels in a world that revolves around the concept of a "discreet music" that on occasions opens into dimensions that are even more eclectic and look towards neo-classical music.
A curious character: well known amongst musicians and enthusiasts, he chose not to pursue a “career”, maintaining his own personal ties to his land and people, living on “heart felt” concerts, collaborations and teaching.

The approach is deliberately spontaneous, with the album recorded in less than two days, using rough sounds and the energy of the moment.

WITH BILL LASWELL on bass, Fred Frith on guitar, and Charles Hayward on drums, Meridiem was bound to be a fascinating, surprise-packed musical project.
All that heavyweight instrumentation was marshaled to provide settings for the voice and lyrics of Percy Howard, an operatically trained singer who takes Meridiem's powerful fusion of prog rock and free jazz over the top with soulful crooning, idiosyncratic phrasing, and eerily controlled artistic bellowing.
