Captain Charles Hazlitt Upham, VC and bar (September 21, 1908 November 22, 1994) was a New Zealand soldier who won the Victoria Cross twice during the Second World War: in Crete in May 1941, and at Ruweisat Ridge, Egypt, in July 1942.
After capture, he was sent to an Italian hospital to recuperate but attempted to escape numerous times before being branded "dangerous" by the Germans and incarcerated in the infamous Colditz Castle on October 14 1944.
After the war Charles Upham took up the New Zealand government's scheme of offering ex-soldiers the chance of a farm of their own.

The ashes of Captain Charles Upham VC & Bar were buried in the graveyard of St. Paul's Church Papanui, following his death on 22 November 1994 and cremation in the Harewood Crematorium, Christchurch on 25 November 1994.
The Upham family plot includes an upright headstone to Charles Coates, a priest from the 1800s, as well as six family plaques, one of which commemorates Charles Upham and his wife Molly.
The Charles Coates headstone was moved slightly to the left of the family plot and the rock placed beside it, both stones being set into a coloured concrete base.

Frank Brooks Upham (7 September 1872 - 15 September 1939) was an admiral in the United States Navy during the Spanish American War and World War I. Born at Fort Apache, Arizona, Upham was appointed to the United States Naval Academy on 6 September 1889 and graduated on 2 June 1893.
At the time of the Spanish-American War, Upham was on the staff of the Commander in Chief, Asiastic Squadron, Commodore George Dewey; and the young officer received his baptism of fire during the Battle of Manila Bay.
