Charles H. Hollenberg, MACP, a leading Canadian educator and researcher, died on April 8, 2003, at age 72.
Born in 1930 in Winnipeg, Dr. Hollenberg got his medical degree from the University of Manitoba Faculty of Medicine in 1955.
In 1970, he became chair of the department of medicine at the University of Toronto as well as physician-in-chief of the Toronto General Hospital.

Charles Hollenberg’s academic career began at McGill University in the 1960s, where he carried out an active programme of research in fat metabolism, and actively promoted the growth of scientific medicine at the Montreal General Hospital.
Dr. Hollenberg was particularly noted for his skill in recruiting and mentoring promising young researchers and practitioners.
In 1991 Dr. Hollenberg accepted the position of President and CEO of the Ontario Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation (OCTRF) and gave this organization, which had been providing excellent clinical care but was beset with administrative problems, a new life as Cancer Care Ontario and Cancer Care International.

Hollenberg in honor of his own native Hanover, and for the five years that he resided here previous to his death, it is not too much to say that he was at the head of all the best improvements of the village, and that he was most ably assisted by Messrs.
Hollenberg died July 1, 1874, while on passage to visit his native city of Hanover.
At present writing, Hollenberg is a village of over one hundred people, containing in the way of business two general stores, one hardware store, one drug store, two flsmith shops, a grain warehouse and agricultural implement depot, one hotel and a boarding house.

 The Gairdner Foundation
In 1970, Dr. Hollenberg was appointed the Sir John and Lady Eaton Professor of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Medicine, University of Toronto, and Physician-in-Chief of the Toronto General Hospital, positions he had held for eleven years.
In 1981, Dr. Hollenberg was appointed Charles H. Best Professor of Medical Research at the University of Toronto, and was instrumental in development of the Banting and Best Diabetes Centre, an interdisciplinary focus for diabetes research.
Among Dr. Hollenberg's numerous honours are appointments as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and as an officer of the Order of Canada.

Charles Hollenberg is a founding member and currently an active Board Member of the Friends of CIHR and its predecessor organization Alumni and Friends of MRC.
Hollenberg has had an illustrious career as a leader in Canadian academic medicine and has served as President and CEO of Ontario Cancer Care and Vice-Provost of Health Sciences at the University of Toronto.

Hollenberg is one of the University of Manitoba's most distinguished graduates.
He is the immediate Past President and Chief Executive Officer of Cancer Care Ontario and earlier held the Eaton Chair in Medicine and the Best Chair in Diabetes at the University of Toronto.
Hollenberg's lecture is one of a series being given by award recipients in centres across Canada during the Foundation's anniversary celebrations.

 Hollenberg Pony Express Station
Built on Cottonwood Creek in 1857 by Gerat H. Hollenberg, this station was also the largest stop along the Pony Express route.
Afterwards, most of the 163 stations fell into ruins but somehow the Hollenberg Station managed to survive.
Hollenberg Station is located four miles north of U.S. 36 on K-148, and one mile east on K-243 in Hanover, Kansas.

 Dr. Charles H. Hollenberg 1930-2003
It is with great sadness that we announce that our dear friend and associate Dr. Charles H. Hollenberg died April 7, 2003 at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto.
His legacy will be remembered and felt by the multitude of acolytes and professional colleagues that prospered intellectually from his stellar contributions to academic medicine and health administration in Canada over the years.
Friends of CIHR mourn his demise and will send condolences to his loving wife Mimi and his son Dr. Tony Hollenberg of Boston.

Currently he is Professor of Medicine and Physiology, and he heads the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for the Study of Atherosclerosis in Diabetes, both at the University of Toronto.
A native of Winnipeg, Dr. Hollenberg completed undergraduate science and medical degrees at the University of Manitoba, followed by postgraduate training in Montreal and Boston, becoming in 1959 a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
During this illustrious career Dr. Hollenberg received numerous awards and several honorary degrees, including Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and Officer of the Order of Canada.

The Hollenberg store was smack-dab on the freight route starting at various jumping off points along the Missouri River.
However, the door to Hollenberg Station was open, so we walked in.
There were displays describing the Oregon and Pony Express Trails, a bit about the Hollenbergs and so forth.

The Wilderness Medical Society is keenly interested in fostering awareness and appreciation among healthcare professionals and scientists for the research of health-related concerns in outdoor and wilderness activities.
The Charles S. Houston Research Award provides financial support to a medical student selected on a competitive basis for a research project in the field of wilderness medicine.
A wide variety of research projects are acceptable for submission, including clinical investigation, laboratory ("basic") science, epidemiological surveys, development of new techniques or novel application of existing techniques, improvements in equipment design or use, public information, and injury prevention.

Charles Hollenberg (who was at McGill at the time) recalls that "...the majority of McGill endocrinologists, many of whom were international leaders, were opposed to the formation of a Canadian society since they felt that Canadian needs were adequately met through the American Endocrine Society.
During the first decade of its existence the society rapidly developed into its present form, with council members representing the regions of the country elected for three year terms.
This brief history is dedicated to the memory of Daniel Roncari and Harold Copp, Otto Rorstad reviewed the manuscript and made helpful suggestions.

The BBDC has also received generous donations from industry and individuals which have funded various research programs for students and fellows.
Dr. Edward A. Sellers, a personal friend of Dr. Charles Best, was the first Director of the Diabetes Centre (1978-1981).
He was succeeded by Dr. Charles H. Hollenberg who was appointed Director from 1981-1993, followed by Dr. Bernard Zinman who served as Director from 1993-2000.
