Humphreys was born in Haverford, Pennsylvania and died in the same place.
As a youth Humphreys was apprenticed to a shipbuilder in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
After the war Humphreys became an important shipbuilder in Philadelphia; and, when Congress in 1794 passed the act providing for the construction of six frigates, he was called upon to design them.

     Rachel Humphrey was born on 18 February 1815 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Colonel Decius Humphrey and Laura Adams.
In 1869, Colonel Decius Humphreys wrote a letter to the author, expressing his willingness to advance this work, which was then in progress, and referring to sources of information which showed his long familiarity with the subject, and the desire which he felt that the genealogy should be brought to a successful issue.
Laura Humphrey died on 3 December 1825 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT, at age 1.

George Humphreys enlisted in the Army in Ireland 12 November 1847 and travelled to Australia with the 58th Regiment as a guard on board the Pestonjee Bomanjee - a ship transporting convicts to Australia.
More bad luck was to follow though - daughter Anne died in 1891 aged 26 and eight years later son Charles George died aged 30.
George, Harriet, Anne and Charles George are buried in a family grave in the Symonds Street cemetery, Auckland, New Zealand.

They chose for their Secretary, Charles Thomson, a native of Ireland, who, in early life, had emigrated to Delaware, but was then a citizen of Philadelphia, of character, fortune.
John Adams wrote in his diary, that Charles Thomson was "the Samuel Adams of Philadelphia; the life of the cause of liberty."
