In the short and disastrous war of 1805 the archduke Charles commanded what was intended to be the main army, in Italy, but events made Germany the decisive theatre of operations, and the defeats sustained on the Danube neutralized the success obtained by the archduke over Massna in the desperately fought battle of Caldiero.
Strategic points, he says (not the defeat of the enemys army), decide the fate of ones own country, and must constantly remain the generals main solicitude a maxim which was never more remarkably disproved than in the war of 1809.

After two failed, and embarrassing, attempts at reclaiming the throne in Budapest, Charles was taken by the British and forced into exile on the island of Madeira where he eventually died of pneumonia.

Along with Charles’ motive and interest to follow through on his aunt’s bequeath to the church, he would have had a similar desire to assure the continued beauty and integrity of the Shroud after the samples were removed.
