War of Spanish Succession Erupts in Europe
Archduke Charles was a cousin of the deceased King Charles II and a brother of the powerful Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, King Joseph I of Austria.
The tide of war was moving inexorably against the French and their allies when a sudden expected event caused a suspension of hostilities: Emperor Joseph I died and Archduke Charles of Austria succeeded to his throne.
Encouraged by Louis XIV, King Charles II of Spain, as he was dying without children, designated Louis' grandson Duke Philip of Anjou as his heir and successor to the throne of Spain.

 Decret de Nova Planta
The Great Alliance found staunch allies in the Catalan supporters of the Archduke Charles of Austria against Philip V, while the German states were divided between the two blocks.
Charles II, who died without leaving an heir, had made an effort to ease tensions with Catalonia, so it was not surprising that when the question of succession was posed, the Catalans mistrusted the absolutism of the French Dynasty, and showed greater inclination towards the Austrian claimant.
The pressures brought to bear on the dying king led to the designation of the French claimant over Archduke Charles of Austria, nephew of the Queen of Spain (Mariana of Neuburg) and son of the Austrian Emperor Leopold I. Charles’s claim was supported by the Catalans, England, Holland, and some German states.

Inner_Austria austria habsburg htm ferdinand austrian leopold inner further archduke emperor - KnoliX.com
The Inner Austrian line founded by Archduke Charles II prevailed again, when his son and successor as regent of Inner Austria became Emperor as Ferdinand II and King of Bohemia and Hungary in 1620.
The Tyrolean line of Ferdinand's brother Archduke Leopold V survived until 1665, when their territories ultimately returned to common control with the other Austrian Habsburg lands.
After a reunification around 1500 when all lines but the Inner Austrian one went extinct, the Habsburg lines were split up again in 1564 among the children of Emperor Ferdinand I.

 Archduke Charles
The epileptic younger brother of Holy Roman Emperor Francis II, Archduke Charles of Austria ( Erzherzog Karl) ( September 5, 1771 - April 30, 1847) achieved respect both as a commander and as a reformer of Austria's army.
In the short and disastrous war of 1805 the archduke Charles commanded what was intended to be the main army, in Italy, but events made Germany the decisive theatre of operations, and the defeats sustained on the Danube neutralized the success obtained by the archduke over Massna in the desperately fought battle of Caldiero.
The new army was surprised in the process of transition by the war of 1809, in which Charles commanded in chief; yet even so it proved a far more formidable opponent than the old, and, against the now heterogeneous army of which Napoleon disposed it succumbed only after a desperate struggle.

ANTON VON MARON - EMPEROR JOSEPH II, ARCHDUKE OF AUSTRIA
Joseph II was the first Emperor of the House of Habsburg-Lothringen, the eldest son of Archduchess Maria Theresia of Austria (herself the elder daughter of the last Habsburg Emperor, Charles VI), who had married Francis Duke of Lorraine, elected Emperor in 1745.
This sketch, for an uncompleted portrait of the Emperor Joseph II, shows a young man, probably painted soon after his father’s death, standing a little unsure of himself, wearing the uniform of an Austrian general.
He is decorated with the red and white cordon of a knight Grand Cross of the Order of Maria Theresia (the highest military Order of the Empire, founded in 1757 to commemorate the Austrian victory of Kolin at the beginning of the Seven years War).

On his abdication in 1556, Charles left Spain, the Netherlands, and the Italian domains, as well as the overseas empire, to his son Philip II, while Austria was ruled by Charles's brother, Emperor Ferdinand I, who in 1526 also succeeded to the thrones of Bohemia and Hungary.
As head of the House of Habsburg, Archduke Otto, Charles's eldest son, petitioned the Austrian government in 1961 to be allowed to return to Austria as a private citizen.
He was born in Graz, Austria, the grandson of Emperor Ferdinand I, and was educated by Jesuits, from whom he acquired a deep antipathy toward Protestantism.
