Navarre was a small kingdom in the Pyrenees, between France and Castille, which had long been a vassal-state of France.
At the beginning of the series of conflicts now known as the Hundred Years War in 1337, Navarre's queen (Juana II) had been an ally and Peeress of France, although her son, the turbulent Charles "the Bad", pursued a somewhat different policy.
At the time Joan of Arc's letter was sent in 1429, Navarre was essentially under a joint rulership: upon the death of Charles "the Noble", his daughter Blanca had inherited and therefore she and her husband Juan II served as rulers.

According to Street, San Saturnino was the first Bishop of Pamplona.* Georgiana Goddard King, who edited the 1914 edition of Street’s book notes in her comments that this is the oldest Gothic church in Navarre, belonging to the second half of the thirteenth century.** Street’s plan shows the church, the interior of which he decribes.
The Cathedral of Pamplona was begun in A.D. 1397 by Charles III of Navarre to replace an earlier structure dating from about 1100.* Street does not mention the chapel Bayne has sketched, but describes the wrought iron Reja in front of the Capilla mayor within the cathedral itself.
In his description of this screen, he mentions that the "whole stands upon a moulded and panelled base of stone."* A similar arrangement is seen in Bayne’s detail of the chapel grille (A4a).
