Charles Keeping was born and grew up in Lambeth, London, in a terraced house that housed three generations.
Keeping continued to produce colour picture books from time to time, including Sammy Streetsinger (1984), about a subway busker's rise to fame as a pop star and subsequent return to happy obscurity, and his final book, Adam and Paradise Island, another story of the changing landscape of London, which was published posthumously in 1989.
Charles Keeping died of a brain tumour on 16 May 1988.

Sure, it suggests the evolution of Charles' musical genius, but it also depicts his dirt-poor childhood, the trauma of a drowned younger brother, his heroin addiction, his womanizing, troubles with the law, and the hell he got from Christians when he created "soul" by mixing Gospel with the devil's music—the blues.
Hackford manages a tone and look throughout the film that's in keeping with Charles' music and personality—though, of course, it didn't hurt that Charles himself had a hand in almost every aspect of the film before he died.
Charles felt a lifelong guilt over the death of his brother, and Hackford chooses to play it like "a ghost story," showing exactly how much it haunted the musician.

"Keeping station" refers to holding a position in the water - not moving relative to the land - and here we're talking about staying still without being secured to a dock or anchored to the bottom.
We hold the boat in place by piloting it at (not "to") a certain spot without making any "way", and unless there is absolutely no wind or current, station keeping requires very active and positive control of your vessel.

The simplicity of "The Keeping" suggests a simple love poem to an unknown other, perhaps a religious epiphany about how one creates from nothing a sense of belonging.
Charles East hints at this in his poem by choosing a word out of our time "wert".
