Charles Francois Felu was born in Waermarde, western Flanders, on June 26, 1830, the third son of a tax collector and his wife.
One day, when Charles was a small boy, he was sitting with his mother in a meadow, eyeing a tuft of daisies that he was unable to pick for want of hands.
She later placed a ball between his toes so that he could learn to play ball with his two brothers, and had a special bench built so he could learn to balance on one foot while using the other to toss a ball or perform other tasks.

During one séance Lafontaine's patient held the live wires of a battery for ten minutes after the same voltage had made members of the audience recoil immediately.
When "pins" were thrust into the "vulnerable parts," large electric shocks were run through the body, pistols shot next to the ear, ammonia held under the nose, and fingers held directly above the flame of a candle, it was hard for onlookers to claim that an apparent lack of sensation was an act of fraud.
At this stage witnesses were presented with acts of clairvoyance, prescience, and "traction." Following Lafontaine's example, domestic lecturers embarked on the lecture circuit, inflicting upon their subjects an armory of tortures.
