Charles Mangin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Charles Mangin (1866–1925) was a French general officer during World War I.
Mangin's Sixth Army bore the brunt of the main attack during the Second Battle of the Aisne, the main component of Robert Nivelle's costly assault.
Although he was despised by his troops (who gave him the nickname, "The Butcher"), Mangin's 10th Army was still responsible for the crucial Allied counter-attack at the Second Battle of the Marne.

 First World War.com - Who's Who - Charles Mangin
Charles Mangin (1866-1925) epitomised the 'offensive spirit' mandated by the French Army high command prior to the start of war in August 1914, by figures such as Joffre and Lanrezac.
Mangin's Sixth Army bore the brunt of the main attack during Second Aisne, the centrepiece of Robert Nivelle's bold assault; with the failure of the attack Mangin was, along with Nivelle, rapidly removed from effective command (Nivelle to North Africa).
Despised by his troops and nicknamed "the butcher" - a consequence of his fixed strategy of the offensive - Mangin's Tenth Army nonetheless was responsible for the critical Allied counter-attack at the Second Battle of the Marne, an action that largely resurrected his military reputation.

First World War.com - Primary Documents - Charles Mangin on the Second Battle of the Marne, July-August 1918
The Second Battle of the Marne - which ran from 15 July to 4 August 1918 - was intended as Germany's final major attempt at breakthrough on the Western Front prior to the arrival of ever-increasing U.S. troops on the battlefield.
Once it became clear that the Germans had not only failed in their aim to win the war in the offensive, but had in fact lost ground, a number of German commanders, including Crown Prince Wilhelm, believed the war was lost.
Reproduced below is the view later given by French General Charles Mangin - commander of the French Tenth Army - concerning the turning point of the Allied counterattack at the Marne and which led to victory.

Joffre, however, supported Nivelle in dismissing the suggestion, a decision that was fortunately vindicated by a sudden drain upon German resources as a result of a Russian offensive on the Eastern Front, which meant that fifteen German divisions had to be withdrawn from Verdun to aid in the defence on the east.
A new French commander of the Verdun forts, Third Army’s General Charles Mangin, was also appointed, reporting to Nivelle.
Following a rest pause, Mangin renewed his offensive, retaking ground lost since the start of the German attack.

In 1845, french scholar Charles Mangin published Theatre de Hroswitha.
Through his edition Mangin argued that Hroswitha's plays were intended for performance and divided the manuscript into scenes (the original manuscript was not) and reinstituted original language that could be construed as "stage directions" which was suppressed by Celtes ("Was Hrosvitha Performed During Her Lifetime," 450).
These changes began and continue to influence the intense debate of whether or not Hroswitha's plays were written to be performed.

 Eric Margolis - FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT
The battle's epicenter, forts Douaumont and Vaux, were retaken by French General Robert Nivelle and his deputy, Gen. Charles Mangin, known to all as `the Butcher.' The haughty Nivelle, a gunner, had perfected a technique of infantry advancing on the heels of rolling artillery barrages.
By this novel method, French infantry was able to storm German trenches while most enemy troops were still sheltering in their bunkers.
Undeterred by human mercy or military sense, and heedless of cost, Nivelle and `Butcher' Mangin kept hurling their men at the Chemin des Dames.

The division established a distinguished fighting record from 1914 to 1916, yet proved in 1917 the most mutinous division in the entire French army, only to regain its elite reputation in 1918.
Drawing on sources from ordinary soldiers to well-known commanders such as General Charles Mangin, the author explains how the mutinies of 1917 became an explicit manifestation of an implicit struggle that took place within the French army over the whole course of the war.
Smith pays particular attention to the pivotal role of noncommissioned and junior officers, who both exercised command authority and shared the physical perils of men in the lower ranks.
