Charles Martin Loeffler - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Loeffler was only about 12 when this happened; the father spent the rest of his life in prison, dying of a stroke before he was due to be released.
Loeffler decided to become a violinist and studied in Berlin with Joachim, Kiel and Woldemar Bargiel, then with Joseph Massart (and composition with Ernest Guiraud) in Paris.
Loeffler often cultivated unusual combinations of instruments, and was one of the earliest modern enthusiasts for the viola d'amore, which he discovered in 1894 and wrote parts for in several scores as well as arranging much music for it.

Charles Martin Loeffler (1861-1935) was one of the most respected composers in the United States at the time of his death.
Loeffler was originally trained as a violinist and had a distinguished career as an orchestral musician, serving as assistant concertmaster with the Boston Symphony Orchestra for twenty-one seasons.
He began composing seriously in the mid-1880s, and after his retirement from the BSO in 1903 divided his time between composition, teaching violin, and overseeing the farm in Medfield, MA which was his retirement home.

Charles Martin Loefeler - Leo Orstein - Dane Rudhyar
Loeffler is both broad and diatonic in the German, Straussian manner, and precious and pentatonic and nasal in the French and Debussian; La Bonne Chanson lying more to the east, and A Pagan Poem to the west, of the spiritual Rhine.
Of all Loeffler's carefully chased works, it is A Pagan Poem, with its admirable piano filagree, its acrid trumpet triads and precipitous rhythms, that leaves one least conscious of finicky tightness.
For, after all, Charles Martin Loeffler cannot be counted a European composer, close as his work lies to music made in the old world and expressive of it; and slight as is its development beyond what has been produced there.

Charles Martin Loeffler was born in Berlin in 1861, the family following his father, who was an engineer (and also a writer under the name of Tornow), to Russia, Hungary and Switzerland, arriving in Paris in 1879.
In around 1870 in Russia, Charles began to learn violin, and decided at the age of thirteen that he wanted to be a professional violin player.
In 1903 Loeffler decided to concentrate exclusively on composing, left the orchestra, and, having spent a year in Paris, moved to Massachusetts where he had a farm and horses, leading an increasingly sedentary existence until his death in 1935.
