Charles Nodier (April 29, 1780 - January 27, 1844), French author, was born at Besançon.
He was sent to Strassburg, where he lived in the house of Eulogius Schneider, the notorious Jacobin governor of Alsace, but a good Greek scholar.
In 1811 Nodier appears at Laibach as editor of a polyglot journal, the Illyrian Telegraph, published in French, German, Italian and Slav.

Nodier was a librarian in Besançon and later at the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal in Paris.
He is generally conceded to be one of the tone-setting founders of the French Romantic Movement and to have significantly influenced Hugo, Sainte-Beuve, Vigny, Lamartine and Musdet.
The collection was assembled by A. Richard Oliver during a stay in Paris to research his monograph, Charles Nodier: Pilot of Romanticism.
