Nolin disagreed with Riel’s proposal that the region be granted provincial status, put forth on 3 February, and he evidently resented his ascendancy over the Métis.
Nolin was an early advocate of armed resistance and he helped draft the petition of December 1884 outlining the grievances of the Métis and the Indians in the northwest.
Nolin became a member of Riel’s council, or exovedate, in March 1885 but his behaviour and actions were equivocal.

Nolin pleaded innocent last month to charges he kidnapped and murdered Jonathan Wessner, 20, whose body was found on a beach in Woods Hole two weeks after he was seen leaving a party with Nolin on Sept. 20.
Nolin has lived on Cape Cod since his release from the Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Norfolk, where he served the remainder of his 12- 20-year sentence on three counts of rape of a child under the age of 14 and kidnapping.
Nolin petitioned in 1994 for his transfer back to the state prison, but Grabau rejected the original request, saying the state demonstrated he had a "superficial understanding of his sexual offending, continues to have inappropriate violent fantasies, and has an ambivalent approach to participation in treatment."

Charles McDonald, spokesman for the Sex Offender Registry Board, said yesterday that, as a matter of procedure, when the board can't locate an offender the local police are informed by the board and asked to find the person.
Nolin served 18 years for raping a 10-year-old Lowell boy before moving to Mashpee in 2000, but his status as a sex offender was not known in the community because the level of his offense was never classified by the state.
Nolin, who was released from prison in 2000, signed in with the Sex Offender Registry Board, moved to Mashpee, and then to Falmouth, where authorities believe he recently murdered a 20-year-old aspiring golf pro named Jonathan Wessner.

Charles Nolin (1837 – 28 January 1907) was a Métis farmer and political organiser noted for his role in the opposition of the North-West Rebellion of 1885.
Along with Louis Riel, Nolin initially advocated taking up arms in order to resolve Métis grievances with the Canadian government, but changed his stance following Riel's estrangement from the Roman Catholic clerics of the Saint-Laurent mission.
Charles Nolin opposed Riel in 1870, and deserted him in 1885.He was elected as the member for Batoche, Northwest Territories in the 1891 election.

Nolin, 39, served 18 years for kidnapping and raping a 10-year-old Lowell boy in 1982.
Nolin finally registered his Falmouth address with the board on Sept. 23, after he became a suspect in Wessner's murder and nine days before he was charged with the killing.
Nolin, an apprentice working with a Falmouth plumber since 2000, told the registry board he was self-employed and thus did not have to give a work address.

Nolin, 39, was released from prison in 2000 and was required to register as a sex offender with the police in Falmouth, where he had been living and working as an apprentice plumber.
Nolin's known record dates to 1982, when he pleaded guilty to rape and kidnapping charges and was sentences to 12 to 20 years in prison.
Nolin's attorney, Robert W. Nolan, contended that law enforcement officials were using the priest sexual abuse scandal to pressure the diocese into forcing Kelly to cooperate in their case against Nolin.

In correspondence that he wrote to John A. McDonald on two separate occasions, Campbell referred to the rights of an accused in Manitoba to a mixed jury, something Riel would not be entitled to in the North-West Territories.
Campbell wrote "very urgently" to Minister of Militia and Defence Adolfe Caron (law partner and brother-in-law of Riel's lawyer, Charles Fitzpatrick) to divert Riel from Winnipeg to Regina because, as he told McDonald, a trial in Manitoba would result in "a miscarriage of justice".
He refused "to consent to the animal life of an asylum" as he passionately stated to Magistrate Richardson in interrupting his lawyers cross-examination of Charles Nolin.
