Odegaard quickly proved himself as a skillful administrator demonstrating particular ability in managing personnel, using the press and interacting with politicians.
Odegaard closed his career by serving as special assistant to the director of the National Park Service until his retirement from NPS in 1997.
Charles and his wife Evelyn, continue to remain active in the Seattle area after his retirement, finding a warm part of the country to visit in the winter, and enjoy spending considerable time with their grandchildren.

Odegaard again visited the Blaine Community Chamber of Commerce that month, where he expressed his awareness of the Second Street complaint, and revealed his intention to create a parking area valued up to $17,000.
Odegaard’s promised parking area was under preparation; two houses at the park’s edge were removed from the north side of A Street, and their lumber was given away.

Denny, a descendent of Seattle founder Arthur Denny who would later become dean of the Evans School, joined with star UW basketball player Jack Nichols to form what they called the “Denny Bell Committee,” and took over the annual bell-ringing job.

 WAMI: A New Concept in Medical Education and Rural Health Care
Proposals were made in Washington State to build a second medical school and to build new medical schools in Idaho, Montana, and Alaska--states which have never had a medical school.
In 1971, the UW pioneered a new approach to solving the complex problems of rural health care, under the leadership Robert L. Van Citters, then Dean of the School of Medicine, and with the support of UW President Charles Odegaard and Washington State Governor Daniel J. Evans.
This experiment, now in its 25th year, created a four-state regional medical education network called the WAMI Program, an acronym for the participating states of Washington, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho.
