Charles Christopher Pepys, 1st Earl of Cottenham (April 29 1781 - April 29 1851), a lawyer, judge, politician, and eventual Lord Chancellor of England, was born in London, England.
He was the second son of Sir William W. Pepys, a master in chancery, who was descended from John Pepys, of Cottenham, Cambridgeshire, a great-uncle of Samuel Pepys the diarist.
Both as a lawyer and as a judge, Lord Cottenham was remarkable for his mastery of the principles of equity.

Pepys was nominated Clerk of the Acts: this was the commencement of his connexion with a great national establishment, to which in the sequel his diligence and acuteness were of the highest service.
Pepys was only thirty-seven years of age when he closed his Diary in 1669, and that of the remainder of his life we have no regular account; although the materials for it which exist have encouraged the hope that this portion of the Life may yet be written.
Pepys, whose constitution had been long impaired by the stone, was persuaded by his physicians to quit York Buildings, now Buckingham-street, (the last house on the west side, looking on the Thames,) and retire, for change of air, to the house of his old friend and servant, William Hewer, at Clapham.

In 1618 Paulina Pepys married a brother of the 1st Earl of Manchester, Sir Sydney Montagu, who in 1627 acquired the house and estate of Hinchingbrooke, near Huntingdon.
In his diary of November 1st 1660 he recalled how he rejoiced in the execution of Charles I. His future employer, Edward Montagu, a commander of the parliamentary army, fell out with the Parliamentary side over the execution and left politics for several years, re-emerging as a supporter of the King.
In 1685 Charles II died and was succeeded by the Duke of York as James II.
