Charlie Ruggles was born in Los Angeles, California in 1886.
Ruggles died of cancer at his Hollywood home in 1970 at the age of 84.

Famous for his prickly personality, Ruggles was nonetheless friends with Henry Cowell, Edgard Varese, Charles Ives, Ruth Crawford Seeger, and Charles Seeger.
His method of atonal counterpoint was based on a non-serial technique of avoiding repeating a pitch class until a generally fixed number such as eight pitch classes intervened.
Ruggles was also a prolific painter, sellings hundreds of paintings during his lifetime.

Charles Frederick Ruggles was born in St. John's, Nfld., on Jan. 21, 1923, the son of Frederick and Ida Ruggles.
In 1958 Ruggles closed his business in St. John's and moved to Montreal to continue to develop the "Visualizer." He expanded it to include news and advertising, which he hoped would help defray the cost.
In the spring of 1997 Grace Ruggles presented a number of photographic negatives and prints taken by her husband to the archives.

Born Nov. 27, 1924, in Hawthorne, Calif., Ruggles was the youngest of six children of contractor Charles Ruggles and the former Jenny Belle.
Ruggles, who was in the Air Force Reserves for 40 years, graduated from the Los Angles Police Academy in the mid-1940s and was on the force just a short time before he participated in the Vanderbilt Mansion bust.
In addition to his wife, Ruggles is survived by three sons, Mathew Ruggles and Jack Ruggles Jr., both of Las Vegas, and Michael Ruggles of Hawaii; three daughters, Valerie Langley, Pam Wells and Shann Soffee, all of Las Vegas; a brother, James Ruggles of California; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

While appearing in the Rodgers and Hart musical Spring is Here (1929), Ruggles made his talking picture bow in Gentleman of the Press (1929), portraying the first in what would turn out to be a long line of drunken reporters.
