Charles Michael Schwab was born in Williamsburg, PA in 1862.
While Schwab worked at Carnegie Steel from 1897-1903 he was known by Andrew Carnegie's steelworks as their, "bright young man." (Steel Profiles, p.1, 1997) Once Schwab became President he had ideas of expansion right from the get go.
Schwab's response to this statement was to offer to pay the man's mortgage if he could get the furnaces running as efficiently as he wanted.

Schwab served as the intermediary between Carnegie and banker J. Morgan, and the sale of Carnegie's company became the main step in organizing the U.S. Steel Corporation in 1901.

Schwab at age 39 was president of the biggest company in the world, United States Steel Corp. After personality conflicts there, he left to take over and remake another steel company, Bethlehem Steel Co., which he incorporated Dec. 10, 1904.
To diversify the company, Schwab, known by most as Charlie (he is unrelated to the discount brokerage by the same name) was interested in producing a wideflange steel beam in the shape of an H. It was a risky venture that required building a new mill to make an unproven product.

Charles M. Schwab was born on April 18, 1862, in Williamsburg, PA., and grew up in Loretto, PA. In 1879, he began working for the Carnegie Co. as a stake-driver in engineering corps of Edgar Thompson Steel Works and Furnaces in Braddock, PA. This plant formed part of Carnegie Brothers and Co., Limited.
Schwab was frequently promoted while working at the Edgar Thompson Steel Works, and in 1886, Carnegie appointed him to the position of general superindentent at the Homestead works.
In 1889 Schwab became general superintendent of the Edgar Thompson Steel Works and later went on to become the president of Carnegie Steel Company, Limited.
