CHARLES SEYMOUR, 6th duke of Somerset (1662—1748), succeeded his brother Francis, the 5th duke, when the latter was shot in 1678 at the age of twenty, by a Genoese gentleman named Horatio Botti, whose wife Somerset was said to have insulted at Lerici.
Charles, who thus inherited the barony of Seymour of Trowbridge along with the dukedom of Somerset, was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge; and in 1682 he married a great heiress, Elizabeth, daughter of Joceline Percy, earl of Northumberland, who brought him immense estates, including Alnwick Castle, Petworth, Syon House and Northumberland House in London.
The rivalry of the two leaders was ended by the defeat of the Lancastrians and death of Somerset at St Albans on the 22nd of May 1455.

Petworth was rebuilt in the 1680s and 1690s by Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset, who married Elizabeth Percy, the heiress of Petworth and all the other Percy estates (in Cumbria, Yorkshire, and Alnwick Castle in Northumberland).
Charles Seymour, the 6th Duke, was after all the senior descendant of the eldest son of the Protector Seymour – Edward, 1st Duke of Somerset (c.1506-1552) was Lord Protector of England after the death of Henry VIII, and guardian of his only son, Edward VI.
The Seymour connection is an important one as far as provenance goes, and of course the 6th Duke was immensely proud of his lineage, notwithstanding Edward's fate.
