 BOOKS
We follow Hooker from the rural Mississippi of his birth to the post-war boom town of Detroit, and from his Chicago years on Vee-Jay through his rediscovery in the ’90s and into comfortable semi-retirement in California at the age of 84.
Murray evokes these times and places with the eye of a sociologist and the pen of a poet.
Those are the last two words you’d apply to Hooker’s music, of course, and Murray evokes those guttural burrowings as effectively as he did Hendrix’s transcendent space flights.

Murray's extensive bio goes all the way back to the beginning in a sprawling literary effort worthy of Hooker's lengthy career.
In addition, Charles Shaar Murray does a magnificent job of placing Hooker and his inimitable style within its historical, sociological, cultural, and musical context, including several interesting "sidebars" on the history of the blues, the nature of blues music, and that intangible something that makes Hooker so unique and so influential.
Murray also shares the bias that many Brits share of being convinced that America is a land seething with racism and racial prejudice, from the day the first Europeans landed here up to the present day.

Circumventing the traditional, names- and dates-laden methods of biography, Murray's book is a free-wheeling journey through Hooker's Mississippi birthplace, the musical and social backgrounds against which he made his first recording, "Boogie Chillen" (which also became his first hit), and his several cycles of success and obscurity.
