Charles Francis Jenkins (August 22, 1867 - June 5, 1934) was a pioneer of early cinema and one of the inventors of television, though he used mechanical rather than electronic technologies.
His businesses included Charles Jenkins Laboratories and Jenkins Television Corporation (the corporation being founded in 1928, the year the Laboratories were granted the first commercial television license in the United States).
Jenkins was born in Dayton, Ohio, grew up near Richmond, Indiana, where he went to school, and went to Washington, D.C. in 1890, where he worked as a stenographer.

Charles Shyer - Biography - Moviefone
Triple-threat writer/director/producer Charles Shyer has managed to maintain a successful career for close to three decades, much of it in collaboration with one-time spouse Nancy Meyers.
Shyer and Meyers had a huge hit at the beginning of the '90s with the remake of Father of the Bride, starring Steve Martin.
Shyer's directorial career hit a snag when his 1994 Julia Roberts film I Love Trouble bombed, and a sequel to Father of the Bride the following year failed to produce any momentum.

Charles: Alfie, that kind of guy whose whole thing is face, boobs, bum, is always going to be around in some form or another.
Charles: I think letting go of the old movie and not trying to improve that into something because I think at the end of the day you'll improve it into a failure if you try to make the same movie again.
Charles: The ending and the moment when he breaks up with Sienna Miller and watches her go because I think that's where he's starting to realize you f**k people over enough, it's going to start coming back at you.

 Alfie : Charles Shyer Interview
After breaking up with his previous wife, director Nancy Myers, Charles was out on the town, footloose and fancy free and somewhat phobic about committing to another long term relationship.
When co writer Elaine Pope first approached Charles with the idea of remaking the 1960s classic Alfie, which starred Michael Caine as a London based sexual predator, he was initially resistant.
Charles had revisited classic films before - with great success it should be noted - with Father of the Bride and The Parent Trap and was wary of tackling another.

Charles Shyer Bio and Movie Credits - RopeofSilicon.com
Shyer grew up in the film industry where his father, Melville Shyer, one of the founders of the Directors Guild of America, worked with legendary filmmaker D.W. Griffith.
But Shyer caught the writing bug, went to work as an assistant to Garry Marshall and Jerry Belson, producers of the TV series The Odd Couple, and eventually worked his way up to head writer on the hit series.
Shyer and Meyers teamed up again in 1991, to work from earlier material, when they remade the 1950 Vincente Minnelli classic, Father of the Bride.

That, however, may not be such a bad comeuppance if one compares his plight to that of the psychotically dysfunctional couple working at the limo office.
Charles Shyer, Elaine Pope, and company may not think so, but sometimes being alone—and/or having multiple partners—can be more satisfying than being in a relationship simply for the sake of being with someone—anyone.
The bad one is Charles Shyer’s penchant for using alienating freeze-frames and quick cuts as a representation of trendy filmmaking.

 Reel.com: Hilary Swank/Charles Shyer
Little wonder then that director Charles Shyer picked her to play Jean de la Motte Valois, the seductive con-artist heroine of his new period drama, The Affair of the Necklace.
Based on the real-life scandal "L'Affaire du Collier" which helped spark the French Revolution, Affair chronicles a scheme hatched by Valois and her lover Rétaux de Vilette (Simon Baker, of TV's The Guardian) to acquire the funds needed to re-claim her family's long-lost estate.
Not exactly the sort of film you'd expect Shyer, most famous for writing, producing, and directing family-friendly comedies like Baby Boom and the remake of Father of the Bride.

 Charles Shyer
The writing-directing team of Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers provides Martin's character with a perhaps too-broad range of comic responsiveness to the situation, some of it gentle (a ritual game of basketball between dad and his little girl) and some of it slapstick (Martin sneaking around his prospective in-laws' house and encountering a guard dog).
Because Jude Law is, well, Jude Law, you can see why he gets away with it as long as he does, and the actor also pulls off the usually awkward trick of narrating directly to the camera.
The writer-producer-director team of Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers (Father of the Bride) can't lift this sugary ode to Howard Hawks's His Girl Friday to a believable--let alone enjoyable--plateau.

Cut to 2004, and Alfie is reborn in the form of a pink-pressed-shirt-wearing, tousled-hair-sporting Jude Law.
In this go-around, opening in theaters today, co-writer, producer and director Charles Shyer (1991's "Father of the Bride," 1998's "The Parent Trap") funnels his knack for pairing classic cinema with contemporary social style into a neoretro peek not of swinging London, per se, but of a swinging Londoner.
And this time, it's the pendulum of the Big Apple that he's swinging from.
