Born in Caddo, Texas, in 1919, Steen was the son of Charles Augustus and Rose Steen.
Despite the fact that his sons John, Charles, Jr., and Andrew were all under four years of age and M.L. was expecting their fourth son, Mark, he accepted a $1,000 grubstake from his mother and headed for the Colorado Plateau.
Steen began diversifying his interests by investing in such ventures as Arabian horse breeding, a marble quarry, an executive prop-airplane factory, a pickle plant, and real estate.

Fifty-one years ago, on July 6, 1952, a geologist from Texas named Charles Steen, down on his luck and about to give up after two years of fruitless searching for uranium deposits in the area, finally struck it rich at his Mi Vida claim in Lisbon Valley southeast of Moab.
Steen and his wife Minnie Lee (M.L.) hosted many parties at their home over the years, attracting corporate types, politicians, and Hollywood celebrities.
Steen, now in his eighties and reportedly afflicted with Alzheimer’s, lives in Colorado with his son.

In 1952 while targeting the Cutler Formation, geologist Charles Steen drilled into 13 feet of U3O8 ore (uraninite) in the basal Chinle formation approximately 100 feet above his planned depth into the underlying Cutler formation.
Following Steen's discovery a dozen companies began exploring and developing mines in both the Cutler and the Chinle Formations and shipping the ore to Salt Lake City and later to Moab.
The dominant uranium mineral in the district is uraninite UO2 with associated lesser amounts of coffinite U(Si04)(OH)4 and vanadium minerals montroseite, VO(OH) and doloresite, 3V2O4-4H20.

Steens was the first syrup I remember ever tasting.Now I live in Boise, and these folks around here have no idea what cane syrup is. Can't wait to get my order.
I've loved Steens syrup as long as I can remember eating pancakes at my grandmother Myrtle's house in Breaux Bridge- she used to get a compementary case of Steens, in the cans, every year, not sure why.
Steen syrup is a great syrup and is good for the economy of Vermilion Parish.Now that's its on the internet more peple will be come aware of it.
