When Strouse graduated from the Eastman School of Music he intended to make a career in the classical field, and studied for a time with Aaron Copland.
As for Strouse and Adams' shows, "All American" (1962), a musical about college football, failed to score heavily, but "Golden Boy" (1964) lasted for 569 performances on the sheer strength of Sammy Davis Jr.'s appeal.
It was four years before Strouse and Adams took off again with "Applause," their second big hit, which ran for over two years, and, like "Golden Boy," had a gilt-edged box office star in Lauren Bacall.

Charles Strouse, (born 7 June 1928), is a Jewish-American composer and three-time winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical.
Strouse is also the creator of the ASCAP Musical Theatre Workshop and co-writer of the 1958 top-ten hit Born Too Late with Fred Tobias.
Charles Strouse recently reunited with old lyricist partner Lee Adams on a charming musicalization of the movie Marty, which starred John C. Reilly in its 2002 world premiere in Boston.

Charles Strouse sure can write show tunes (Bye Bye Birdie was his first show on Broadway) but he is more of a shouter than a singer.
Charles Strouse had played some tunes on that DVD that I had never heard before and instantly fell in love with ("Once Upon A Time" from the show All American starring Ray Bolger) so I was kinda disappointed in this CD.
