Charles Sturridge took a somewhat threadbare tale and turned it into a stirring, dramatic account of the life, tribulations, and ultimate achievement of the 18th century English horologist, John Harrison.
Sturridge takes up her story and fleshes it out, providing the sort of background and character development that the book lacks.
Sturridge has demonstrated that he can squeeze good acting out of a virtual lemon such as Ted Danson in Sturridge's adaptation of "Gulliver's Travel." He has far more to work with here, and the results are remarkable.

 Beckett - Film: "Ohio Impromptu"
Sturridge takes his cues from Beckett's monotone staging and shoots the majority of the piece in a richly contrasted fl and white.
At the point where Reader pauses his reading for clarification, Sturridge wisely allows us to view the book, and the effect of seeing the actual text of the play in stark typeface adds a vague frisson of self-reflexive dislocation impossible in the theater.
Sturridge makes no mention of this in the DVD addenda, the printed materials, or his online interview, which leads one to wonder whether he intended to override Beckett's intentions, or perhaps simply failed to realize the multiple possibilities in the ending as written.

 Article
Sturridge, who turns 50 this year, is planning to concentrate on Shackleton's second Antarctic expedition: "That's the one where they failed to reach land, their ship Endurance sank on the ice and they spent two years trying to get home."
While others looked for answers in the stars, Harrison thought he could make a clock that would be able to keep time accurately on board a ship - something that most deemed impossible - thus allowing sailors to chart their exact position and avoid tragedy.
Sturridge, whose career encompasses film (A Handful of Dust, Fairytale: A True Story) and TV (Brideshead Revisited, Gulliver's Travels), positively revels in the research, a habit he has continued with his latest project.

The DVD Journal | Quick Reviews: Shackleton
Stung by his 1907 failure, Ernest Shackleton was still determined to make a name for himself in Antarctica, and in 1914 he planned an entirely new expedition that would traverse the continent — the two-year adventure remains one of the most harrowing in modern history, and can be considered the last of its kind.
Charles Sturridge's television miniseries Shackleton concerns the voyage of the Endurance, Ernest Shackleton's Antarctica-bound boat, which departed England on a voyage to Buenos Aries, where it would make final preparations for the dangerous journey south and Shackleton's crossing of Antarctica.
But it was worth it — it's hard to think of a film that captures the harsh, frozen vastness of Antarctica as well as Shackleton, creating a perfect backdrop for the extraordinary subject matter.

Brideshead Revisited is the heartbreaking story of Charles Ryder and his various relationships with the Flyte family - beginning with Sebastian Flyte, a fellow Oxford student struggling with alcoholism and homosexuality.
As Charles loves and loses Sebastian to drink, the Flyte family struggles to hold on to their values and to each other in the changing political, social and religious climate of 1920s England.
The story spans many years; from Charles' halcyon college days with Sebastian to the glory of fox hunts and summer vacations at Brideshead - the Flyte family castle, to his life as an artist in Paris and South America, through a failing marriage and his last attempt at love with Sebastian's sister, Julia.

Charles and Sebastian go sunbathing in the nude, and they always seem to be surprising each other in the bathtub.
Consequently, Charles' lengthy love affair with Sebastian's sister Julia (Diana Quick) seems less like the inevitability of fate and the hallmark of maturity than the desperation of a conventional, foolish man who is looking for a more suitable substitute for his one great love.
When Charles describes the “thin bat squeak of sensuality” he feels when he gives Julia a cigarette, his choice of words is all too revealing.

This film version of what many consider Evelyn Waugh's finest novel is the handiwork of Derek Granger and Charles Sturridge, the producer-director team responsible for "Brideshead Revisited," the popular TV adaptation of another Waugh novel.
Reteaming James Wilby and Rupert Graves, the lovers in 1987's MAURICE, the film is mounted in lavish Merchant-Ivory fashion and re-creates the well-appointed London drawing rooms, sumptuous manor houses, and arid gentility of the British upper class circa 1932.
Thomas has an affair with a handsome but dim social climber, Graves; Kyle is killed in a hunting accident; and Wilby is faced with the possibility of losing Hetton Abbey.

As with Maurice (Graves) and Howard's End (Bonham Carter), the author is E.M. Forster, but the director is Charles Sturridge (Brideshead Revisited) and, unlike Room with a View (which featured both actors), the tone is tragic rather than romantic.
Sturridge ends the film on a series of jarring notes with each one peeling back the onion layers of character that come into sharp focus as the film progresses.
