 Tingwell takes off
For Charles 'Bud' Tingwell, there has been a lot of 'air time' between flying RAAF Spitfires and Mosquitoes during World War II, and receiving acting accolades, achievements in the arts and induction to the TV Logie's Hall of Fame as one of Australia's most distinguished performers.
After being shoe-horned into his 'G' suit, a trim looking Tingwell was ready to greet the task ahead, as he did over the skies of Australia, Canada, England and the Middle East all those years ago.
In a long and distinguished career, the closest Tingwell came to being type-cast on screen as a war time pilot was when he played an air traffic controller in the 1945 film Smithy, the story of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith.

In the early 1980s, during the shoot of All the Rivers Run, Tingwell had a young make-up artist in tears after challenging a technique she was applying to his very sensitive eyes.
Or, to put it another way, Tingwell's life as an actor, recorded here, is a tender, quiet challenge to the salacious big-noting typical of the showbiz memoir.
Tingwell mentions nothing of this; an odd omission in a book that acts as a tribute to the generation of pioneers that bolstered Australian screen history in the 1950s and 1960s, such as the Crawfords (creators of Homicide, which starred Tingwell).

It is interesting to note that the school Headmaster (Charles Tingwell), when lecturing Debbie, behaves in a manner equally as sexist and offensive as the under-educated males who lead the A-group.
This, along with Debbie's boyfriend's admission that his mother made a set of curtains for the back of his panel van, indicates that the juvenile's behaviour was not a new thing, but was the result of the children receiving their worldview from people who were equally as discriminatory.
In hindsight, the film can be read as both a dark, brooding, analysis of Australia's attempts to break away from its colonial heritage and as one of Australia's most confronting and honest feminist works.

Bud A Life by Charles Bud Tingwell - Book Review - Memorable TV
Reviewer: JK Charles “Bud” Tingwell is a bloody nice bloke and this new autobiography detailing almost 60 years in the entertainment business proves it, not a tale to reveal deep dark secrets but an engaging and enjoyable one nevertheless.
Growing up in Coogee, Bud had a spell as a Spitfire pilot in the RAAF during world war II before embarking on an acting career, first on radio then in a succession of supporting roles in both Australian movies and Hollywood ones, working closely with Chips Rafferty throughout much of the early 1950’s.
Happily married (although recently widowed) for many years to Audrey, Tingwell comes across as a real family man, not one to get caught up in the moralistic mayhem of the film world despite being good friends with such heavyweights as Richard Burton and Peter Finch.
