Charles thus grew up surrounded by women: a fiercely protective nanny, his refined mother Marie-Louise, two grandmothers, both indulgent, and for a time a great-grandmother, not to mention aunts, aunt-figures, and servants.
When Lucien Trenet was finally demobilized in the spring of 1919, returning as a stranger to Charles, he resumed his notarial practice in a small town, while Marie-Louise remained in Narbonne.
Trenet's Theatre des Ailes had ceased operations May 11, 1940, one day after the start of the invasion, and the crooner was transferred to barracks in Lorraine.

Louis Charles August Claude Trenet was born in Narbonne on May 18 1913, the second son of a notary and amateur violinist whom he later described as not "all that bourgeois.
Trenet soon returned to his father's native Perpignan, where, by the age of 14, he was producing poems and paintings for Le Coq catalan, a newspaper owned by Albert Bausil, a family friend.
Trenet's songs were later often seen as representing this epoch in French history, when Leon Blum's Popular Front government instituted holidays with pay, and people began to flock to the seaside for the first time.

Charles Trenet was born in Narbonne (in the South of France) on May 18th 1913.
Trenet brought the house down, performing a selection of his greatest hits ("Y'a d'la joie", "la Mer" etc.) and the old showman soon had the 20,000-strong audience singing along at the top of their voices.
Trenet's funeral service was held on 23rd February in the Madeleine church in Paris and Trenet was subsequently cremated at the Père-Lachaise cemetery.

The excellence of his solo players together with a fine pianist make this recording well worth listening to again and again.
Trenet’s voice tells you that he is in a light-hearted mood again as he appears to be walking somewhere and explaining all about everything he sees.

One of the treasures recently unearthed from Trenet’s bottom drawer is a spoken version of Fais ta vie, on which he plays up the sententious nature of the song’s lyrics.
The final song on the album is a new version of Le Visage de l’amour (a song Trenet originally gave to Dalida) which he performed as the opening number at his last ever concert at La Salle Pleyel, in Paris, in 1999.

As with all of Trenet's songs this one was originally published by Raoul Breton in France with the title "La Mer" (The Sea).
In the past I had written lyrics to a couple of Trenet's French hits and when we finally met on one of his trips to the U.S. he complimented me on my work.
I loved the unusual melody he had written but was not intrigued with his French lyric, which told about the different moods of the sea, and how they affected him.
