 AUCTIONEER UNCOVERS FORGOTTEN DRAWINGS BY LEADING WILDLIFE ILLUSTRATOR CHARLES TUNNICLIFFE
A cache of drawings by the celebrated wildlife artist and book illustrator Charles Tunnicliffe bequeathed by him to his niece has been discovered in her home following her recent death and will be seen publicly for the first time when they come onto the auction market next week.
Tunnicliffe, the son of a farmer, was born in Langley in 1901.
It was the culmination of a national appeal, led by Tunnicliffe’s friend, Wales’s greatest living artist Sir Kyffin Williams, backed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (of which Tunnicliffe had been a vice-president and benefactor) and the National Museum of Wales.

Tunnicliffe bequeathed the drawings to his Mrs Ridgway, but they had lain forgotten until her death.
After Tunnicliffe's death, much of his personal collection was sent for auction at Christie's, but three days before the sale it was bought by Anglesey council for £400,000 after a national appeal.

Tunnicliffe was born and raised in Washington, D.C. He graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1943 and Harvard in 1951, where he received a degree in engineering sciences and applied physics.
Tunnicliffe worked with Raytheon Co. and the Courier Citizen newspaper in Lowell before leaviing to start Tunnicliffe Associates, a Winchester-based engineering firm he ran for 10 years before retiring.
Tunnicliffe leaves two sons, Peter Tunnicliffe of Sudbury and William Tunnicliffe of Marina Del Ray, Calif.; two daughters, Virginia Thorstensen of Hampton Falls, N.H., and Elizabeth Tunnicliffe of Winchester; one sister, Evla Kervian of Fort Pierce, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

 History of the Atlantic Cable & Submarine Telegraphy - Communications Old & New
Charles F. Tunnicliffe (1901-1979) was one of England's finest wildlife artists and book illustrators.
Tunnicliffe was commissioned by Cable and Wireless, Ltd., to produce a series of illustrations entitled "Communications Old And New", a pictorial history of communications from smoke signals to radio.
In 1944 the illustrations were published as a book, also titled "Communications Old And New", with the author of the text identified as Lt. Commander R.T. Gould, R.N. Tunnicliffe produced 28 scraperboard illustrations for the series.

English use of tea dates from about 1650 and is attributed to Catherine of Braganza (Portuguese princess and queen consort of Charles II of England).
Perhaps the best known were Typhoo tea, Brooke Bond(manufacturer of PG Tips), the latter of whom also provided albums for collectors to keep their cards in.
Some renowned artists were used to illustrate the cards including Charles Tunnicliffe.
