Topic: Charles V Duke of Lorraine

  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: St. Charles Borromeo
Charles' office of secretary of state and his care for the business of the family did not prevent him from giving time to study, and even to recreations in the form of playing the lute and violoncello, and a game of ball.
Charles was now assured that it was his duty to remain in the world; but all the more he felt he ought to visit his diocese, though the pope always opposed his departure.
Charles was at Lodi, at the funeral of the bishop.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: House of Guise
Having been sent in 1536 as the ambassador of Francis I to Charles V to reconcile their differences, he warned the king on his return of the unmistakably warlike intentions of the emperor.
The dukes of Guise, however, as descendants of the House of Anjou, had certain pretensions to the Kingdom of Naples, and it was doubtless with the secret intention of defending these claims that François de Lorraine furthered an alliance between Henry II and Pope Paul IV which was menaced by Philip II.
This stipulated that, at the death of Henry III, the Cardinal de Bourbon, Archbishop of Rouen (1520-90), the third son of Charles de Bourbon, Duke of Vendôme, should be recognized as heir to the crown, "to the exclusion of all French princes of the blood at present heretics and relapsed".

 Charles IV --  Encyclopædia Britannica
king of France and of Navarre (as Charles I) from 1322, the last of the direct line of the Capetian dynasty; his inglorious reign was marked by his invasion of Aquitaine and by political intrigues with his sister Isabella, wife of King Edward II of England.
The first Charles who ruled over the French was Charlemagne, whose name means “Charles the Great.” His reign belongs to the history of western Europe rather than to any one of the separate kingdoms, but he is usually considered to be the first in the line of French kings named Charles (see Charlemagne).
Unfortunately for Charles I (born 1600, ruled 1625–49), he was king of England in the days of the Puritan Revolution and at a time when new ideas of the rights of the people were coming into sharpest conflict with the old theory of the divine right of kings.

The title "Duke of Brabant" was created by the German Emperor Frederik Barbarossa in favor of Henry I, son of Godfrey III of Leuven (who was Duke of Lower Lotharingia at that time).
Later on, it followed with the Burgundian inheritance until the French Revolution, although the northern part of the territory of Brabant was actually governed by the United Provinces during the 17th and 18th century (see Generality Lands).
