Charles Watson Wentworth was born in 1730 on the i9th of March (according to some, the 13th of May), and was educated at Westminster school and St Johns College, Cambridge.
The barony of Rockingham, however, descended to a cousin, Thomas, father of the prime minister, a grandson of Edward, the 2nd baron (1630-1689), who had married Anne, daughter and heiress of Thomas Wentworth, 1st earl of Strafford.
He was created earl of Malton in the peerage of Ireland in September 1750, and succeeded his father as 2nd marquess of Rockingham in December of the same year.

Charles Watson-Wentworth was the son of the 1st Marquess of Rockingham, whose family was descended from the Watsons of Rockingham Castle, Northamptonshire, known as prominent Yorkshire Whigs.
In 1782 Rockingham succeeded North as First Lord of the Treasury and prime minister in alliance with the Earl of Shelburne.
He resigned from his various non-ministerial offices in 1762 in protest at the removal of the 4th Duke of Devonshire from the Privy Council, but from the factional intrigues that ensued, he ultimately emerged as a new prime minister in July 1765, when he was appointed (13 Jul 1765) First Lord of the Treasury.

Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham ( link), was Prime Minister of Great Britain back in 1765 and he owned a racehorse called Whistlejacket.
He lived in Wentworth Woodhouse (see here and here) where he comissioned a room especially for the picture of his racehorse painted by George Stubbs.
My great, great, great, great grandfather’s company (Yates, Haywood and Co link) was comissioned to design a special fireplace for that room (which I think is the one in the background of this picture).
