William III begged La Fosse to remain in England and decorate Hampton Court, but Mansart the architect recalled him to Paris, that he might carry out the decoration in the dome of the Invalides.
The ceiling of the Galerie d'Apollon in the Louvre is also by La Fosse, and he executed a good deal of work at Versailles, including the Salle de Diane and the roof of the chapel, and there are five of his panel pictures in the Louvre.
La Fosse was intimate with Crozat, and executed some decoration for him at his country house.

The son of a goldsmith, La Fosse spent five years studying in Italy, where he was exposed to Venetian color, made copies after Raphael, and studied the ceiling paintings of Pietro da Cortona.
La Fosse painted mythological and Biblical scenes in the Louvre and the Tuileries, and spent nine years painting at Versailles.
La Fosse's robust, colorful painting style was an important precursor to the lighter and more graceful Rococo style that dominated French taste in the early 1700s.

At the end of the seventeenth century and the beginning of the eighteenth, the technique of drawing in three coloured chalks was commonly employed by French artists known as "colourists", who were influenced by the paintings of Peter Paul Rubens, among others.
Charles de La Fosse, the leader of the colourists at the French Academy, chooses here to copy the detail of Nestor and his associates from "The Wrath of Achilles", a work by Rubens comprising a series of eight scenes illustrating the life of the hero of Homer’s "Iliad".
Nestor, seen at the centre of the composition, would later be a model for the depiction of Joseph in La Fosse’s greatest work, "The Presentation of the Virgin to the Temple", painted in 1682 for the Carmelites in Toulouse.
