  Charleston East Sussex
Charleston, a modest 18th century farmhouse set close to the foot of the South Downs, is a memorial to the Bloomsbury Group.
In 1916 Charleston became the home of the artist Vanessa Bell, her fellow artist (and sometime lover) Duncan Grant, the writer David Garnett, her two young sons and an assortment of animals.
After his death the Charleston Trust was formed to save the house and restore it to its former glory.

She moved to Charleston near Firle in Sussex in October 1916, with her two children, Duncan Grant and his current lover David 'Bunny' Garnett, a nurse, a housemaid, a cook, and Duncan's dog Henry.
In December 1916, Dora Carrington was invited to stay at Charleston, and provided a lively account of the experience in a letter to her friend Christine Nash.
Charleston became a full-time home again during the Second World War as it was safely out of reach of the bombs falling on London, and Vanessa continued to live there for part of each year until her death in 1961.

He was the Treasury's chief representative at the Paris Peace Conference but, disillusioned with the negotiations, he resigned and retreated to Charleston, where he wrote his celebrated polemic The Economic Consequences of the Peace (1919).
He spent much of his personal wealth on collecting books (he collected the papers of Isaac Newton) and pictures and financing the Cambridge Arts Theatre; he was also instrumental in setting up the Arts Council of Great Britain, of which he was the first Chairman.
