County Mayo (Irish: Contae Mhaigh Eo, the plain of the yews) is a county on the west coast of Ireland.
Mayo is bordered to the south by Galway, to the east by Roscommon, and to the north-east by Sligo.
The river Moy in the northeast of the county is renowned for its salmon fishing.

Charlestown (in Irish, Baile Chathail) is a village in County Mayo, Ireland.
Written in 1967, when Ireland was in the middle of a 60 year economic depression, was highly critical of government policies towards rural areas, and took Charlestown as an example solely because it was the town of the authors birth.
Charlestown was built in the middle of the last century, on the initiative of Lord Dillon's agent, Charles Strickland adjoining Bellaghy in County Sligo.
