CHARLESTOWN, Ind. (AP) — Workers building a boat ramp at southeastern Indiana's Charlestown State Park have uncovered the apparent remains of a 4,000-year-old "kitchen" ancient American Indians tribes may have used to prepare their winter food supply.
The area being studied is part of a 2,700-acre expansion at the park closed to the public.
Larry Gray, the park's property manager, said the $3 million project to install a five-lane boat ramp, a picnic area, parking lot and riverfront walking trail would probably be delayed until late this year or next year.

The City of Charlestown is located within the original Clark's Grant, a portion of the Northwest Territory awarded to General George Rogers Clark and his men for their valor and success in capturing English forts and encouraging French and Indian support against the British in the Revolutionary War.
Established in 1798, Springville was the immediate predecessor of Charlestown, which was surveyed and platted on a ninety acre plot of ground comprised of 149 lots in 1808.
In 1940, Charlestown was selected as the location for the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant which produced smokeless powder for use in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.

On a hill on the other side of the creek right where it enters the Ohio, a stone fort or watchtower was discovered in the early 1800's; no one knew who built it (it was not a Native American structure) and one of the stones had a date of 1187 carved on it.
Falls of the Ohio State Park) is not known or likely to be figured out; but it is interesting to speculate if you're not irretrievably wedded to the notion that our ancestors were too stupid to get across the ocean until Columbus came along.
